Paine immigrated to America in 1774, bearing letters of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. (Who at the time was in England) He soon became involved in the controversy between the America colonies and England and published the extremely successful pamphlet Common Sense (Jan 1776). In this pamphlet he argued that the colonies had outgrown and necessity for English Domination and should be allotted their independence. In Dec. 1776 Paine wrote the first series of 16 pamphlets called The Crisis (1776-83) they were widely distributed and did a great amount to encourage the patriot cause throughout the American Revolution.

Even after the American Revolution, he continued to write essays and pamphlets of independence and the Age of Reason, many of which alienated him from his peers and others but he continued for he felt he was doing the right thing for the people.
